Today is Nagano Namiai Camps 2008 last blog. Today, again we got to play in the river. Then it started to rain but then we went on the bus. We got back at Namiai Yugakukan .
After the rain stopped, we crashed watermelons. It was very fun. First Toriri cracked the watermelon. And then Teo crashed the whole watermelon in half and the first watermelon was already cracked. Then, Kousuke cracked the watermelon in just one blow! The watermelon we ate was delicious! Thank you for the whole month!!
I’m finally beginning to realize that tomorrow I’ll have to bid farewell to all of the people I’ve spent this entire month with. This morning, Yuki had to leave for Tokyo because of an early flight back to America. His presence at this camp was one that brought us tons of laughs and joy, and after he left, it seemed as if he’d left an enormous hole in his wake that sort of put a damper on the rest of the day.
We were scheduled to play at the river for a couple of hours, in the afternoon, but as it began to rain, we had to return to the Yugakukan. I started to feel a little depressed because of the shortage of remaining time we have together, so Kunio, Reina, and I went outside on the front porch and yelled with all of our might at the mountains before us. It was extremely relaxing, but the drowsy, disbelieving feeling still remained.
After a dinner of curry and miso soup (mmmm), we compiled our masses of papers into camp albums, mementos of this months events and all the stuff we learned about soybeans. We certainly got a lot of reading material! It was fun reviewing all the stuff we’ve done since the beginning of July.
Well, this is the final blog assignment of Camp Namiai 2008. Thanks to all of you who tuned in regularly and left comments throughout the month! I’m sure I’ll never forget all of the people at this camp, and all the jokes, arguments, laughs, and tears we’ve gone through together. Hope to see some of you again!

This afternoon, we made pork soup and Tofu. First, we made pork soup. We prepared the chopping board, knife, pot, and gas ring. The ingredients was radish, carrot, napa cabbage, onion, pork, miso, and stock. First of all, we cut the vegetable. We cut radish and carrot by “ichou giri”. For onion, we cut by ”Hangetsu giri”. And for napa cabbage, we cut by “tanzaku giri”. Next, I put water in the pot. I boiled the water with hot ring. Then I put it in the mix of vegetable. Five minutes later, I put the pork. Then ten minutes later, I boiled the vegetable and pork. Also I put miso and stock. Finally, I put the soup in the bowl. There were less salt, so it was very good. Everybody eat it happily.
After that, we made a Tofu. At first, I put the soymilk in the pot. I warmed the soymilk until 70 to 80 degrees(℃)。Then I put sea salt (NIGARI) in the pot. Everybody wait until the tofu becomes solid. After that, I put the soymilk in the milk pack.
Today we had fireworks at Achi village. There were people who had never seen Japanese fireworks. Before the fire works started, the Achi high school students performed the dram. Also, everybody bought food at shops. I bought shaved ice, candy, and a hot squid. There were some people who bought goheimochi and corn. Finally the fire works started. There were different types of shape and colors of the fire works. I was impressed of the finale of the fireworks. I want to see those views again with the campers but the camp will end in 2 days. There is only a little bit left, so I want to have fun with the campers.

Mode Atom » The Koto is a type of Japanese long harp. It has 13 strings and each string has a different sound. Today we all had a chance to play the Koto. To play the Koto you put 3 picks like rings on your fingers. You put them on your fingers and start to train...
1. Put your left hand gently on the Koto while playing with your right.
2. Slide your fingers with power when there are notes that are lined next to each string.
3. For a clear sound, pluck the string with the pick on the right edge.
4. When there is a sharp or flat press on the other end to make a different sound.
Once we got used to the Koto we challenged on a song well known by everybody, “You Are My Sunshine” We practiced a few times and listened to the teacher’s other tips. We improved on the song and switched turns watching and playing while learning.
その曲めいは“You Are My Sunshine ”です。
At night (after dinner) we had a small open concert where the Koto teacher and the Shamisen teacher played western songs that we all knew including one of the hit songs from ABBA “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme”. After we watched and listened to the professionals it was our turn to play in front of everybody. We played “You Are My Sunshine” and had turns. We also included the violin, guitar, and piano at the end. Then we danced once again to the teachers’ western music. We had lots of fun and had a great time.
Today was a relaxing day (Yippeeeeeee!). We finished our projects yesterday and since then, it’s been all play!
This morning, the results of the photo contest were presented by Kuzutetsu. Congratulations to Alisa (first place), Akira T. (second place), Reina (third place), and Kai (Tokubetsu Sho/runner up). Following the award ceremony, we began our “intense” Shamisen and Koto training. The Shamisen somewhat resembles a banjo, has only three strings, and is surprisingly heavy. There is a certain way to play the Shamisen with a Bacchi and to master it you must also have good posture. The majority of us thought that the Shamisen was harder to play because holding it was extremely tiring! (seriously). Our arms turned to jello! Despite our struggles, we were able to play the very popular American song, “You are my Sunshine” by the end of the day. After dinner, we had a “Mini Live” and showed off our new found talents (which include Shamisen, Koto, and Japanese Dancing). Yes, we did dance in circles though it was rather an embarrassing moment. Izzi, was beet red, however I (Reina) was happily flailing my arms. Overall, today was a day to soak up the Japanese culture and make more happy memories before the end of camp (sob cry tear wahhhh!). The clock is ticking! (tick tock).

"It doesn't mean the vertical photos are the best but some photos could be much better if they were taken vertically. It gives the depth to the photos"
"It doesn't mean that all the other photos weren't great because they didn't get the award. There is a story in each photo and I understood what they really wanted to express."
Today we presented the Daizu project at school. My project was about the Nattou triangle. My partner was Akira. I was relieved when I finished presenting because I knew that I had done a good job. After the poster presentations, we all sang the Daizu song. I was a little nervous because everyone was listening. Mario (Eric) was also in the song.
Then we walked back to the yugakukan. On our way back though, we went to Namiai Ginza where we bought snacks. We also saw Pochi, the dog. I petted him. Pochi is brown and like a sausage. He is very cute! When we got to the yurakukan, we had free time. Then we had dinner. Now we will have Hanabi Taikai (fireworks).
Passamos no 「Namiai Guinza」; e todo mundo comprou doce.

Today since this morning, we’ve been doing core 2 . We’ve been practicing the daizu project. After that, we got ready for the party. We got into groups and made food. We made daizu food. It was healthy. First we made natto spaghetti. We chopped scallions and also chopped natto. We put in a bowl and mixed it. We finished natto sauce. We washed and cut okra. We put everything together and finished. The menu includes daizu pudding and edamame soup. We ate it with the center kids and it was yummy.
Today during core 2 time, we practiced the project presentations. Later that day, we prepared dinner and dessert because the people from the center come here to eat today for dinner. For that, we separated in to groups. There were 4 groups in all and I was assigned to the Kinako cookies. Others were assigned to Soymilk pudding, Natto spaghetti, Edamame soup, and Miso dips. When we were done, we took a small break. During the break, some people practiced their presentation.
When the center kids came, Kouta did some Rakugo or traditional Japanese comedy. Almost everyone there was laughing. After that we did our poster presentations. And for the final show, we did the DAIZU NO UTA. We ate dinner after that, and all the foods there had some kind of soybeans in them such as Miso, edamame, Kinako, Soymilk and Natto. While I ate, I was surprised that many great foods can be made from soybeans.
When everyone finished eating, we went outside and had a campfire. There we sang and played games, we had so much fun. Today was a very very fun day.

Among my entire 3 weeks at Camp Namiai, I think this day was an especially exciting one because it gave me a chance to experience some new things. In the morning, after practicing the “Daizu Song” a little bit, we walked over to the small pond by the center to catch some rainbow trout. After baiting the hook and catching the fish, we carried them carefully over to the center, where we first washed them, and then beat their necks with the blunt side of a knife to stun them, pulled their heads off partway, and then squeezed out their entrails with our bare hands. It was quite a grotesque business, and as I was washing my trout, it jumped out of my hands and dove under the stove, but I managed somehow! Hide-san at the camp then roasted them on sticks for us, and we got to eat them for lunch. It was really tasty, and I almost forgot all of the trauma I went through trying to kill it.
In the afternoon, we went to the nearby river. We were told the water was very cold, and some of the others found it so as well, but I thought it was actually fairly warm. However, after swimming around for several minutes, my body suddenly froze up, and I found I couldn’t walk properly. That sensation took a while to fade away. There were some really deep spots, as shallow as the river appeared, and in some places, the force of the water was such that the water formed a sort of whirlpool and I was almost sucked under. Those points were for “middle schoolers only,” but it was pretty dangerous for us too.
At any rate, it was a really fun little trip, and I hope we go there again soon!

Today we went fishing to catch some rainbow trout. They were easy to catch. 0nce we caught a trout we would bring it to the center to clean. First we would clean the fish. Then we cut its gills open, and we would take the guts out. It was very very gross! After we cut it, we had to clean it again in the water to get the blood out, there was a lot of blood. It was also very slimy so it kept slipping out of our hands and into the sink. After that we would pick a stick. Then you would stick it into the fish’s mouth. There were some gross sounds. After that, we would put a lot of salt on the fish to get some taste and we placed it on the plate so the people from the center could cook it for us. Everyone got one fish.
We went on a bus to the river. The river was freezing cold!! But it was fun. Alisa caught a frog and a lot of tadpoles. I went in the donut tube. It was fun! Yuuki, threw water on me and I was so cold that I started to cry. Kai, Reina, Hori, and Kunio cheered me up. That was very nice of them.
Today we went to Namiai River. When we got in the river, it was freezing cold!! But it was fun when we rode on the inner tube, we got to surf around till the shallow water. I was the first on to go down stream. It was not that scary & it was so fun. About 10 to 25 minutes later, I was freezing cold that I needed to get my towel. Moments later, they found a longer surfing crosse than the one that I found. Since it was a very huge one I had to wait for a long time.
After we all got out, some people caught a frog, & a lot of mini tadpoles. Even do it was only two hours & it was cold, I did not expect to be this fun!

This weekend, we went to Umanose tent hiking. We started to climb the mountain at 2: 30p.m. The mountain road was too steep. The nature that we saw while walking, it was very beautiful. One and half-hours later, we arrived in Mt.Umanose.
After that, we made a tent and dinner. Also we saw the beautiful sunset. Then we played a game while it was getting dark. I felt little scared game because it was too dark. And finally, everyone slept earlier than usual.
3:15AM in the next day (July 20th), we woke up from the sign from kuzutetu because we were going to climb up again. I felt the moon was too blight. We walked the road while it was getting blighter. In that time, there were too many bags. We arrived at the top of the mountain at 4:30a.m., and then we saw a sunrise at 4:56a.m.. We had another valuable experience. We went back to Umanose because there were tons of bags. Then we clean up the tent, and climbed down.
The one of the big events of this camp was over. I was very happy that I saw a lot of beautiful nature in South Alps Mountain. Also everybody came back safely, so I was happy. The tent hiking is over, but we still have a big project. We will do our best in last one week. Every camper did great job!
Report by Takumi (Japanese & English)
“Wake up,” yelled Kuzutetu. I opened my eyes right open. I tried to wake up but my eyes closed slowly. Right before I fell back asleep, one of my tent-mates hit me and I was forced to wake up. I went out and it was freezing cold so I got my sweater and went out again. I got cheese from Akayan and got bread from. Kuzutetu. We climbed up the mountain with full of energy and power from the will to get to the top of the mountain. But every step we took was very tiring. Also the moon was so bright that it was not necessary to have a flashlight. But what especially annoyed us were the small bugs that came out when we walked on the asphalt. They followed us around and came into our ears. We needed to take a break every 20 minutes because it was so hard.
After an hour of climbing and walking, we finally able to reach the top. When we reached the top, my feet were shivering from fatigue. We ate our breakfast that we got and saw the beautiful southern and central Alps. After we saw the amazing sun rise, we walked down the mountain. It was much easier than climbing the mountain.
Today after we ate dinner with the Center kids, we all went back to the camp where they had set up a haunted house. It was a lot of fun! First, Ooyama sensei read us a scary story and then we walked into the dark room. Konoe had a white sheet draped over her and her hair was covering her face. She was our guide who lead us through the haunted house. Then we walked around the tables and saw Reina sitting at the piano. The card Konoe had given us earlier had instructed us to tap one piano key and take the next card from the dead bodys hand. When we tapped the piano key though, Reina screamed and we were all very surprised and scared. After we got the card, we went to the bathroom. There, Kai had been hanging his neck from a rope attached to the ceiling. When we went to the bathroom, they locked us in and we were trapped. After a short while, they freed us and then we went to the bath - room. There, MM sensei covered her face with her hair and handed us a brush which we were supposed to use to brush her hair. As we left the haunted house, we got some candy.
